The Catholic Church takes marriage very seriously because of its great importance to the couple, to the Christian community and to society as a whole. In the Catholic tradition, marriage is protected by two thousand years of pastoral experience embodied in the practical wisdom of the Church’s Canon Law. The marriage of a man and a woman is valued by the Catholic Church as a blessing ordained by God. It is both a reflection of God’s love, and an indication of God’s love within the world.
For this reason, the Church understands marriage as a life-long partnership in which the couple co-operates with God in the creation of the human race. Marriage is a public event in which the couple professes an exclusive lifelong love for each other. Where the couple are both baptised Christians, marriage is a sacrament which bestows spiritual graces upon them.
Because the Church upholds marriage in this way, it seeks to promote the moral and spiritual well-being and happiness of a couple.
This raises the question as to why the leaders within the church and the people who unite couples in marriage under God's blessing are not allowed to choose a life of marriage for themselves.
I believe this change is important because catholic priests as spiritual leaders are role models for members of their congregation. Marriage and the sharing of your life with another has a positive influence on unions under God's blessing. This should be experienced and demonstrated by priests in the catholic church. Many other faiths accept the spiritual leaders right to marriage.
The shortage of priests is another compelling argument for a married priesthood. One of the biggest problems for Catholic churches is finding a good minister.
